Guided Imagery: Your Mind Already Knows How to Do This

Have you ever thought about biting into a lemon and suddenly noticed your mouth begin to water? Nothing is actually happening to your body, yet your imagination can create a physical response.

Guided imagery works with this connection between the mind and body.

Close your eyes and imagine a place where you feel completely at ease. It can be somewhere you’ve actually been or somewhere that exists only in your imagination. Instead of simply trying to see it, begin to experience it.

What is the temperature of the air? What can you hear? Is there a breeze against your skin? What does the ground feel like beneath you? Are there any smells? What happens in your body as you allow yourself to be there?

You don’t need to visualize perfectly. Some people see vivid images, while others experience sensations, sounds, memories, emotions, or simply a sense of knowing.
The intention isn’t to escape your life or force yourself to relax. It’s to give your mind and body an opportunity to experience something different from whatever has been occupying your attention.
Your imagination is something you are already using every day. Guided imagery simply asks: what happens when you begin using it intentionally?
