Mindfulness doesn’t have to mean sitting in meditation for an hour. It can be 3 seconds, 10 minutes, an hour… however long or short you want! The amount of time matters far less than the act of slowing down enough to notice that you are here.
Can you notice when you’re rushing? Can you become aware of the rush, pause, take one breath, and then continue? That is mindfulness.
It’s feeling the warmth of the coffee or tea you just made in your hands. Looking at your food before taking a bite. Noticing its texture and taste. Chewing slowly enough to actually experience it. Feeling your feet on the ground as you walk, the wind on your face on a breezy day, the warmth of the sunlight on your skin.
And when a thought inevitably pulls you somewhere else, you don’t have to fight it or judge yourself for having it. Notice it. Say hello. Then gently bring your attention back to what is happening right now.
Mindfulness is not about having a perfectly quiet mind. It is the practice of noticing when you’ve left the present moment and choosing to come back. Again and again.
